So, I’m new to this whole blogging thing.
My name is Emily and I’ve been qualified as a nurse for 2 years now.
I fell into nursing accidentally. When I was growing up I knew I wouldn’t like an office job and I wanted to help people. After my a-levels, I topped up my UCAS points with a health and social care BTEC and thought that nursing would probably suit me. To be honest, I don’t think I really understood what nursing was until I started my course. I am so proud to be a nurse and I couldn’t have fallen into a better career. It’s the perfect balance of learning, doing, making a difference, problem solving and working as a team – all things that I love.
I trained at DMU in Leicester (my home town because I didn’t dare venture too far from home!) and when I qualified I started work on a thoracic surgery ward which deals with all kinds of lung surgery – thoracotomies, chest drains, empyemas and EPD’s. It was a great learning experience because I dealt with admissions, discharges, post op care and acutely unwell patients. Six months in, I joined the bank to get myself some experience and branch out. I would recommend everyone join the bank because its invaluable experience. It was scary at first but the more I did it the easier it got and you learn so much. It’s just important that when you are outside your comfort zone you stay safe and hold your hands up if you aren’t sure about something. Practice safely. After a year I decided to move to a cardiac and respiratory AICU for more experience because I realised I quite liked looking after very poorly people and wanted to develop more skills. I work hard and love to support my colleagues.
Keeping myself busy is something I can’t help but do. I was previously a Macmillan volunteer, Caremaker and I’m currently a Nurse Ambassador and Florence Nightingale nurse to name a few things that I do! I enjoy keeping up to date with current nursing issues and am active on Twitter. Twitter is so great for making connections with other like minded people and keeping up to date with whats going on!
I love my doggo, gardening and long walks in the sunshine with pals. I also love a boogie to the radio and pub quizzes.
